Finding standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle is frustrating and often indicates a drainage problem. Before calling for service, several troubleshooting steps can identify or even resolve the issue.

Start by checking the garbage disposal if your dishwasher drains through it. Run the disposal to clear any blockages. For new disposal installations, verify the knockout plug was removed from the dishwasher inlet.

Inspect the drain hose for kinks or clogs. This flexible hose runs from the dishwasher to the disposal or drain pipe. A kinked hose prevents water from flowing out and is easily corrected.

Clean the dishwasher filter, located at the bottom of the tub. Remove it according to your model instructions and rinse thoroughly under running water. Clogged filters are the most common cause of drainage problems.

Check the drain pump for obstructions. Small items like broken glass, food particles, or even stray utensils can block the pump impeller. Access varies by model but usually requires removing the lower spray arm and filter assembly.

The air gap, if installed, can become clogged with debris. This chrome cylinder on your countertop prevents backflow but needs occasional cleaning. Remove the cap and clear any buildup.

Examine the drain solenoid or motor if mechanical components are suspect. These require electrical testing and are best diagnosed by professionals, especially on premium brands like Miele or Bosch.

High-drain loop installation is critical for proper drainage. The drain hose should loop up near the countertop level before descending to the disposal or drain. Improper installation causes siphoning and drainage problems.

If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, the problem may involve electronic controls, pump motors, or other components requiring professional diagnosis and repair.
