Miele Dishwasher Error Codes, and What Each Family Points At

An F-number names the subsystem that stopped reporting, not the part that failed. F11 is water that never left, F12 is water that never arrived, and the families around them cover heating, the door interlock and the leak tray in the base.

A Miele fault code is a direction, not a diagnosis. The F-number tells you which subsystem stopped reporting what the control expected to see, and there are only about six of those on a dishwasher: intake, drainage, heating, the door interlock, the leak tray in the base, and the circulation pump. Knowing which one you are standing in removes roughly five sixths of the machine from the search. It does not tell you which part inside that sixth has failed, and treating it as though it does is how people end up fitting a drain pump to a machine whose filter was packed solid.

That gap between the number and the part is the whole subject of this piece. Two codes account for most of what people actually see, and they sit at opposite ends of the same water path: nothing arrived, or nothing left.

The number belongs to the machine, not to the brand

Before matching your code against anything, find your model. Miele has built dishwashers through several G-series generations, and the fault list is revised between them — the same two digits can point somewhere else entirely on a machine ten years older or newer than the one in the forum thread you are reading. The data plate is on the door edge, readable with the door open, and it carries the model and serial you need.

Older machines complicate this in a different way. Where there is no numeric display, faults are reported by the intake and drain indicators flashing in a pattern. That is the same information at lower resolution: it will tell you the family, not the specific fault, which for a homeowner is most of what a number would have given you anyway.

Water that never arrived

The intake family — F12 and the codes immediately around it — means the control asked for water and did not get the volume it was counting on. Machines like these measure the fill rather than timing it, so a partial flow reads the same as no flow: the count never reaches its target, and the program stops instead of running dry.

Start at the tap. A quarter-turn valve that looks open but was nudged shut behind a cabinet door, and a mesh screen at the hose inlet clogged after work on the street main, are both far more common than anything inside the machine. Newton is on MWRA water, which is soft, so the scale explanation that dominates advice written for harder-water parts of the country is usually the wrong lead here. Restriction in this town is mechanical, not mineral.

Then the hose, which on a Miele is a component rather than a plumbing part. The safety valve lives at the tap end and its wiring runs inside the hose jacket, so it cannot be shortened, spliced or replaced with a generic one. If that valve has tripped, the machine sees a dry supply and no amount of restarting the program will change its mind.

Under-supply behaves the same way on the refrigeration side of the kitchen, incidentally — it is why a built-in starts producing hollow ice long before anybody suspects the plumbing. That story is worked through in what a bad cube tells you.

Water that never left

Drainage — F11 and its neighbours — is the code most Newton kitchens meet first, and it has an order of investigation that rewards patience.

The filters come out first. Both of them: the coarse basket twists free, and the fine filter beneath it is the one that is usually grey and matted. A dishwasher whose filter has not been lifted in a year is not being asked to drain water, it is being asked to drain gravy, and the pump loses that argument.

Next is the route the water takes after the pump. Two failures here are effectively renovation damage and both turn up in kitchens that were finished recently. A new food waste disposer arrives with the dishwasher branch sealed by a knockout plug, and if the installer never punched it out, the machine has drained into a closed pipe since the day it was connected. Separately, a drain hose that runs flat from the machine to the trap instead of climbing first lets the sink push its own water back down into the sump, so the dishwasher fills from the wrong end between cycles.

Only after those does the pump itself become a reasonable suspect — the impeller fouled with a wire twist-tie or a shard of glass, or the non-return flap held open by the same debris.

The tray you cannot see

Miele’s leak protection is a float sitting in a tray under the machine. When water collects there, the float rises, and the response is unmistakable: the drain pump runs the moment the machine has power, continuously, and no program will start. People read that as a pump stuck on. It is the opposite — the pump is the only part behaving correctly.

The repair is never the float. It is finding the weep that filled the tray, which is usually a door seal that has gone hard at the lower corners, a loose clamp on the circulation hose, or a slow drip from the inlet fitting. Drying the tray without finding the source buys about a fortnight.

Heating, and why it is rarely a cheap part

There is no exposed element in the floor of the tub, which is why nothing ever melts down there. Heat comes from a flow-through heater built into the circulation pump housing on many of these machines, so when the code names the heating circuit, the part is often the pump-and-heater assembly rather than a standalone element that unclips.

From the kitchen side the symptom arrives before the code does: dishes coming out cool, plastics greasy rather than merely wet, cycles running long because the machine is holding at a temperature it cannot reach.

The door that will not lock

Interlock faults, generally reported in the F30s, produce a machine that seems dead — no program will start because the control will not run one with the door unconfirmed. On a heavily used dishwasher the cause is often mechanical rather than electrical. The hinge cables stretch, the door sits a few millimetres low, and the latch stops meeting the lock squarely. Lift the door very slightly as you close it; if it latches on that attempt, you are looking at alignment and hardware, not a control board.

What to do with the number you are holding

Write the code down with the model and serial before you do anything else, because clearing it destroys it. Cut the power for a minute, restore it, and run a full program while you watch — a fault that returns within one cycle is a component, and one that never returns was an event. Clear both filters, confirm the tap is fully open, and check under the sink for the knockout plug and the flat hose run.

Stop there if there is water in the base tray, water on the floor, or a burning smell. Those are the three that get worse while you experiment.

Does cutting the power at the breaker actually clear the fault?

It clears the display. Whether it clears the fault depends on what put it there. A control that latched after one odd event — a momentary drop in supply pressure, a program interrupted mid-drain — will come back up clean and stay clean. A control reacting to a component that is still wrong will re-post the same number the next time that component is asked to work, which is usually within one cycle. That difference is the most useful thing a power cycle buys you, so run a full program afterwards and watch, rather than assuming the reset was the repair.

The code only shows on the longer, hotter programmes. Does that narrow it?

Considerably. A fault that never appears on a short cool wash and always appears on an intensive one is usually about heat or about time: the heating circuit failing to reach a target the shorter program never asks for, or a slow fill that a brief cycle tolerates and a long one does not. Note which programmes are clean as carefully as you note which one failed. A technician who is handed that pattern can skip half the tests, and it is information nobody can recover after the fact.

Can I fit a generic inlet hose if the Miele one is the problem?

No, and it is worth understanding why rather than treating it as a sales rule. The safety valve sits at the tap end of that hose and its wiring runs inside the hose jacket back to the machine, so the hose is part of an electrical circuit as well as a water one. A hardware-shop replacement leaves the machine looking for a valve that is no longer connected to anything. The correct part is the matching Miele hose for that model, and it is fitted, not spliced.
