Gas Burner Won't Light: Troubleshooting Guide

Fix a clicking gas burner that won't light or a burner with no spark at all.

Safety Warnings

  • If you smell gas strongly and no burner will light, turn off gas supply and ventilate the area
  • Never leave a burner clicking for more than a few seconds without ignition
  • Ensure all burner parts are dry before testing

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Check if All Burners Affected

Try all burners. If one won't light but others do, it's likely a burner-specific issue. If none light, it could be a gas supply, igniter module, or power issue.

If no burners click, check that the cooktop/range is plugged in - igniters need electricity.
2

Ensure Burner Parts are Positioned Correctly

Remove the burner cap and burner head. Ensure they're seated properly - misalignment can prevent ignition. The cap should sit flat and centered.

Look for arrows or alignment markers on burner components.
3

Clean the Igniter Electrode

The igniter is a small ceramic piece near the burner. Clean around it with a dry toothbrush. Grease or debris on the electrode can prevent spark.

Don't use water on the igniter - let it dry completely if it gets wet.
4

Clean the Burner Ports

Use a needle or safety pin to clear each small hole (port) around the burner head. Clogged ports prevent proper gas/air mixture and ignition.

Never use toothpicks - they can break off and clog ports.
5

Clean the Burner Cap and Head

Wash the burner cap and head with dish soap and water. Dry completely before replacing. Grease buildup can affect flame quality and ignition.

Parts must be completely dry or the burner won't light and may spark continuously.
6

Check for Moisture

If a liquid boiled over recently, moisture may be preventing ignition. Dry all components thoroughly. You can use a hair dryer on low heat to speed drying.

A wet burner area is a very common cause of igniters clicking but not lighting.
7

Verify Gas Flow

Turn the burner to light and listen for the hiss of gas. If you hear clicking but no gas, the problem may be with the gas supply or burner valve.

Don't let gas flow for more than a few seconds without ignition - fire hazard.
