Dryer Not Heating: Troubleshooting Guide

Diagnose why your dryer runs but won't heat and learn about common fixes for electric and gas dryers.

Safety Warnings

  • Unplug electric dryers and turn off gas supply for gas dryers before servicing
  • Never bypass thermal safety devices - they prevent fires
  • Gas dryer repairs should be left to professionals if you smell gas

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Check Power Supply (Electric)

Electric dryers need 240V power - if one leg of the circuit is out, the drum will turn but there's no heat. Check your breaker box for a tripped breaker and ensure both breakers are on.

Even if breakers look OK, try turning them fully off then on again.
2

Check Gas Supply (Gas)

For gas dryers, verify the gas supply valve behind the dryer is fully open. Also check if other gas appliances in your home are working to rule out a supply issue.

If you smell gas, leave the area and call your gas company immediately.
3

Clean the Lint Trap and Exhaust Vent

A clogged lint trap or exhaust vent restricts airflow and can cause the thermal fuse to blow. Clean the lint trap before every load and have the vent professionally cleaned annually.

Clogged vents are a leading cause of dryer fires - take this seriously.
4

Check the Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. Use a multimeter to test for continuity - a blown fuse will show no continuity and must be replaced.

Thermal fuses are usually located on the exhaust duct inside the dryer cabinet.
5

Inspect the Heating Element (Electric)

Check the heating element for breaks or damage. Test with a multimeter for continuity. A broken element will have an open circuit and won't heat.

Heating elements are coils - look for visible breaks in the coil.
6

Check the Igniter (Gas)

For gas dryers, the igniter should glow bright orange when the dryer calls for heat. If it doesn't glow or glows weakly and gas doesn't ignite, the igniter needs replacement.

You can often see the igniter through a viewing port in the burner assembly.
7

Test the Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates drum temperature. If it fails, the dryer may not heat or may overheat. Test for continuity at room temperature - it should have continuity.

A stuck cycling thermostat can cause overheating - a safety concern.

When to Call a Professional

  • Gas valve solenoids need replacement (gas dryers)
  • You're not comfortable testing electrical components
  • Thermal fuse keeps blowing after replacement
  • Control board problems suspected
  • You smell burning or gas
