New England winters are notoriously harsh, and your kitchen appliances need special attention to perform reliably during the coldest months. As local appliance repair experts, we see a significant increase in service calls during winter, many of which could be prevented with proper maintenance.

Your refrigerator works harder in winter than you might expect. While outdoor temperatures drop, indoor heating can create temperature fluctuations that stress the cooling system. Check that your refrigerator is not positioned near heat sources like radiators or heating vents.

Condenser coils should be cleaned before winter sets in. Dust accumulation forces the compressor to work harder, which is especially problematic when the unit is already compensating for indoor temperature variations.

For wine coolers and beverage centers, winter is the time to verify temperature stability. These units are particularly sensitive to ambient temperature changes. Consider relocating portable units away from exterior walls where cold can affect performance.

Gas ranges and cooktops require inspection of all burner components. Cold weather can affect gas pressure and ignition systems. Listen for clicking sounds that continue after ignition, which may indicate moisture in the igniter.

Dishwashers in homes with exterior wall placement should be checked for proper insulation. Frozen water lines can cause significant damage. Run the dishwasher regularly to prevent water from sitting stagnant in lines.

Ice makers deserve special attention. Ironically, ice makers can malfunction more in winter due to lower humidity levels affecting water flow and ice quality. Check water line connections and replace filters as needed.

Finally, schedule a professional maintenance visit before the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Christmas put heavy demands on kitchen appliances, and a pre-season checkup can prevent inconvenient breakdowns during family gatherings.
